The lymphatic system is the primary component of our immune system; thus, after plastic surgeries like the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), liposuction, or tummy tucks, your lymphatic system becomes overactive and will build an abundance lymph fluid. A lymphatic massage, or also commonly known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), is a gentle massage technique that moves this access lymph fluid to local lymph glands to dispose of unwanted fluid and toxins.
Lymphatic massage absolutely works. There have even been MRI images that display improved blood circulation after proper treatment. The question at hand is not if the treatment works, rather, it is if the technique is properly applied. Although many massage therapists claim to know this technique. This massage technique involves a great deal of knowledge of the body’s anatomy. If incorrectly applied, it can cause increased time of recovery, increase the probability to produce lymphedema, and generate added scar tissue (for those post-surgery patients).
This is where I, Carolina Pintos, have credentials that go way beyond just a massage therapy license. I understand human anatomy; having worked with many doctors in Brazil, and now in the United States. Plus, I have over a decade of experience working in several hospitals as a physical therapist.
In this article, I will help explain the benefits of lymphatic massage, and the individuals who may benefit from using this technique.
The benefit of getting a Lymphatic Massage
The drainage lymphatic system is a massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system as a function of collecting the interstitial fluid that did not return to the blood capillaries. Through the lymph nodes, this liquid is filtered and brought back to the blood circulatory system. Among the main benefits of the method are increased hydration and cellular nutrition, acceleration in wound healing, reabsorption of hematoma and ecchymosis, reduction of fluid retention, increased immunity, detoxification of the body, activation of blood circulation, combat cellulite, and body relaxation.
Who can benefit from getting a Lymphatic Massage?
Lymphatic drainage massage can benefit people who are experiencing: Lymphedema, fibromyalgia, swelling or edema, skin disorders, and several other immune system abnormalities.
Most of the clients I have attended are post-op clients, and that is primarily because most plastic surgeries induce the body to go through a traumatic recovery. It is initially recommended that individuals with congestive heart failure, blood clots, kidney problems, infections, or circulation problems, to avoid lymphatic massage and/or any lymph treatment unless it is recommended by a doctor.
